Costume Design: technique and imagination
A dress can tell an era, define a character, and contribute to the identity of a story. At Romics 37, Alessandra Torella, costume designer and fashion historian, talks about Costume Design as an encounter between research, technique and imagination.
A graduate in Set Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, Alessandra Torella collaborated for several years with Oscar-winning Danilo Donati, a master of Italian costume and set design, and in theater with Franca Squarciapino and Hugo de Ana.
Since 1997 he has designed the costumes for numerous productions for cinema, television and theatre, developing an approach that combines historical research, design and attention to detail. Along the way he took part in productions such as Life is Beautiful and designed the costumes for television series including Inspector Ricciardi and The Bastards of Pizzofalcone.
Alongside her work on set and in the theatre, she also works as a fashion historian, curator and teacher of Costume History.
A meeting to delve into the different phases of Costume Design, from research to design, and tell how costume contributes to building characters, atmospheres, and narrative worlds.
