Giacomo Scarpelli, screenwriter, novelist, historian of philosophy, born in Rome, is the author of numerous film scripts, including “The Postman” (for which he was nominated for an Oscar), “The Supper and Unfair Competition” (directed by Scola), “N. Napoleon and Me” (directed by Virzì), and the cartoon “Opopomoz” (directed by d'Alò). With the novel “Estella and Jim on the Wonderful Treasure Island” (Gallucci, 2012), co-written with his father Furio, he won the Cento Letteratura per Ragazzi Award. He has also published “Lisette and the Discovery of Dinosaurs” (with Valeria Conti, Laterza, 2015), “Darwin's Journey” (Laterza, 2018) and “The Arch of Apollo” (Einaudi Ragazzi, 2020).  His judicial-investigative novel “Abundant Precipitations” was published in 2019 and “The Son of Brancaleone” in 2021, the ideal third chapter in the Age-Scarpelli-Monicelli saga, written with Marco Tiberi. In 2026, together with Enzo d'Alò, he published the novel “Oceans of Paper” (Salani), about the last weeks of Emilio Salgari's life. He teaches Philosophy at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
In addition to the Oscar Nomination for “The Postman”, other awards and recognitions include two Grolle d'Oro at the Saint Vincent Festival (for “The Novel of a Poor Young Man” and “The Supper”), two Pegaso d'Oro from the Ennio Flaiano Prize (for “Unfair Competition” and “The Good Battle”), a Ciak d'Oro (for “Witness at Risk”); he also received nominations for the British Academy for Film and Television Arts (for “The Postman”) and the European Film Award (for “Unfair Competition”).
