Matteo Garrone was born in Rome in 1968.In 1998 he made his first feature film, “Middle Earth”, with his production company, Archimede. In 1998 his second film, “Guests”. and in 2000 “Roman Summer. “The Embalmer” (2002) receives the David di Donatello for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor and the Nastro d'Argento for Best Editing.
In 2005 he was in competition at the Berlinale with “Primo Amore”, awarded the Silver Bear for best soundtrack.

In 2008, he signed “Gomorrah”, which won the Grand Prix at the FesOval in Cannes; he won five EFA Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, seven David di Donatello Awards, and two Nastri d'Argento Awards; he was nominated by Italy for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars and was among the top five at the Golden Globes, as well as receiving BAFTA and César nominations. With “Reality” (2012) he won the Grand Prix again at the Cannes Film Festival, 3 David di Donatello Awards and 3 Nastri d'Argento Awards; he returned to Cannes in 2015 with “Il Racconto dei Racconti”, with which he won 7 David di Donatello Awards and 3 Nastri d'Argento Awards.

In 2018 “Dogman” was awarded the Palme d'Or for Best Actor, won 9 David di Donatello Awards and 8 Nastri D'argento Awards and was nominated by Italy for the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2019 he brought “Pinocchio” to the theater, which won 5 David di Donatello Awards and 4 Nastri d'Argento Awards, as well as two Oscar nominations for Best Makeup and Best Costume Design. “Io Capitano” is his latest film, presented at’ the 80th Venice Film Festival. He won the Silver Lion for Best Director, the Mastroianni Award to Seydou Sarr for Best New Actor. Nominated for Best International Feature Film at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, it won seven David di Donatello Awards and was distributed worldwide by Pathé.
